July KTNA Su Valley Voice: "Try Not to Die in July," Advance Directives & Our Community Celebration

Each month, Sunshine Community Health Center joins KTNA's Su Valley Voice to share what's happening at the clinic and highlight health topics that matter most to our rural communities.

For our July episode, host Trisha Costello welcomed Sierra Winter, Community Relations Manager, Allegany Twigg, Community Relations Coordinator, and Amber Moore, Patient Advocate II to discuss an attention-grabbing—but incredibly important—topic:

Try Not to Die in July

Yes... the name is intentional.

Our "Try Not to Die in July" Monthly Health Incentive is designed to make people stop, smile, and most importantly, think about safety. Summer in Alaska is packed with fishing trips, road travel, boating, hiking, ATV adventures, construction projects, and long days outdoors. While we hope everyone has an amazing summer, accidents can happen when we least expect them.

This month's health incentive encourages community members to complete one of the most important—but often overlooked—healthcare documents: an Advance Directive.

An Advance Directive allows you to document your healthcare wishes and designate someone you trust to make medical decisions if you're ever unable to speak for yourself. Having these conversations before an emergency occurs can provide peace of mind for both you and your loved ones.

As a thank-you for completing and turning in your Advance Directive during July, participants will receive a FREE emergency safety tool that can cut through a seat belt and break a vehicle window in the event of an emergency—while supplies last.

Our Patient Advocates are available to answer questions, explain the process, and help community members complete their Advance Directives.

Meet Your Patient Advocates

During the episode, Amber Moore shared how Sunshine CHC's Patient Advocates help patients navigate healthcare beyond their appointments.

Whether it's helping complete Advance Directives, connecting patients with community resources, answering questions about services, or assisting with care coordination, Patient Advocates are here to help make healthcare easier to access and understand.

They're an important part of ensuring patients receive the support they need both inside and outside the clinic.

You're Invited to Our Community Celebration!

The conversation also highlighted one of our favorite events of the year—our Annual Community Celebration on Friday, August 1.

This free family-friendly event brings together local organizations, businesses, community partners, food vendors, activities for kids, health services, giveaways, and so much more—all with the goal of celebrating the strength of our rural communities.

Listeners also heard prerecorded messages from several of our incredible vendors and exhibitors, giving a preview of everything attendees can expect at this year's celebration.

Whether you're coming for free health services, local shopping, community resources, family activities, or simply to spend the day with neighbors, we hope you'll join us.

Thank you to KTNA and Trisha Costello for continuing to provide a platform that helps connect and strengthen our rural communities.

We look forward to talking with you again next month!
