Each month, Sunshine Community Health Center joins host Phillip Manning on KTNA's Su Valley Voice to discuss important health topics affecting our communities. This month's conversation focused on Men's Health Month, a time dedicated to encouraging men to prioritize preventive care, ask questions, and take an active role in their health and well-being.
During the June episode, Phillip was joined by Keith Kehoe, Physician Assistant at Sunshine CHC, for an honest discussion about why many men delay seeking care, the importance of routine wellness visits, and some of the health concerns men are often hesitant to bring up with their healthcare provider.
Why Men's Health Matters
Men are often less likely than women to schedule routine healthcare appointments, even when experiencing symptoms or concerns. Many wait until a problem becomes serious before seeking medical attention. While life's responsibilities, work schedules, and cultural expectations can make healthcare feel like a lower priority, preventive care remains one of the most effective ways to stay healthy and active.
Annual wellness visits provide an opportunity to discuss overall health, review risk factors, complete recommended screenings, update vaccinations, and address concerns before they become larger issues.
As Keith shared during the program, having a trusted healthcare provider creates a safe place to ask questions and have conversations that might otherwise be uncomfortable.
Local Voices, Local Perspectives
In addition to the live discussion, several community members and Sunshine CHC team members shared their thoughts on what men's health means to them.
Dr. Paul Forman, MD, Chief Medical Officer
Dr. Forman emphasized the value of preventive healthcare and the importance of establishing a relationship with a primary care provider before health concerns arise. Building that connection allows providers to better understand a patient's health history,
lifestyle, and long-term goals.
Joel Stigliano, IT Director
Joel reflected on the importance of staying healthy not only for ourselves, but for the people who depend on us. Maintaining physical and mental health helps us continue showing up for our families, coworkers, and communities.
Kyle Wilkinson, Author and Fishing Guide, Bear Paw River Guides
As someone who spends much of his time outdoors guiding clients in Alaska's wilderness, Kyle shared how staying healthy allows him to continue pursuing the activities he loves. His perspective highlighted the connection between preventive care and maintaining an active lifestyle.
Allegany Twigg, Community Relations Coordinator
Allegany spoke about the importance of normalizing healthcare conversations and encouraging men to seek care without hesitation. Preventive healthcare isn't a sign of weakness—it's an investment in your future.
Sierra Winter, Community Relations Manager
Sierra shared personal observations from caring for family members through serious illness and emphasized that taking time for routine healthcare today can help prevent difficult decisions and health challenges later. Small steps taken now can make a significant difference over time.
Questions Men Are Sometimes Afraid to Ask
One of the most valuable parts of the conversation was addressing topics that many men may feel uncomfortable discussing, including:
Changes in energy levels
Mental health concerns
Sleep issues
Sexual health
Weight management
Heart health
Cancer screenings
Lifestyle habits that affect long-term health
Healthcare providers have these conversations every day. No question is too small, too embarrassing, or unimportant when it comes to your health.
Taking the First Step
Men's Health Month serves as a reminder that preventive care is not just about treating illness—it's about staying healthy enough to enjoy the people, places, and activities that matter most.
Whether you enjoy fishing Alaska's rivers, exploring the outdoors, working hard for your family, or simply want to feel your best, taking time for your health is one of the most important investments you can make.
If it's been a while since your last checkup, consider scheduling an annual wellness visit. Your future self will thank you.
