At Sunshine Community Health Center, we are honored to celebrate eight years of service from one of our most dedicated providers: Curtis Harvie, DNP, ANP, FNP-BC, PMHNP-BC. His journey into medicine, his dual specialties, and his passion for holistic care have made a lasting impact on our patients and our community.

To truly understand the depth of Curtis’s work, it helps to unpack what all those letters after his name mean—and how each role strengthens community health here in Alaska.
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)
A Doctor of Nursing Practice is the highest level of clinical training for nurses. Unlike a PhD, which focuses on research, a DNP emphasizes applying evidence-based practices in real-world healthcare.
For our patients, this means Curtis doesn’t just stay current with the latest research—he translates it into hands-on care. His DNP training allows him to combine clinical expertise with systems thinking, always looking at the bigger picture: not just the illness, but the whole person, their family, and the community around them.
Adult Nurse Practitioner (ANP)
As an Adult Nurse Practitioner, Curtis is trained to care for patients across adulthood, from late teens through older age. He provides preventive care, manages chronic conditions, and addresses acute health issues.
This role is particularly important in rural Alaska, where access to specialty care can be limited. With Curtis’s expertise, community members don’t need to leave their region for high-quality adult primary care.
Family Nurse Practitioner – Board Certified (FNP-BC)
The Family Nurse Practitioner certification expands Curtis’s scope even further. Instead of focusing solely on adults, FNPs provide lifespan care—from newborns to seniors.
That means Curtis can be your provider if you’re bringing in your child for a check-up, if you’re managing diabetes in midlife, or if you’re a grandparent looking for support with preventive health. His ability to care for families across generations strengthens continuity of care and builds trust in our clinics.
Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner – Board Certified (PMHNP-BC)
In addition to family medicine, Curtis holds a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner certification. This dual role is particularly rare and incredibly valuable in community health.
Mental health needs are often intertwined with physical health. A patient managing chronic pain may also struggle with depression; someone facing heart disease might also face anxiety. Because Curtis is trained in both fields, he is able to create integrated treatment plans that address the mind-body connection.
At a time when access to mental health care is a pressing need, especially in rural Alaska, having Curtis as part of our team has opened the door for patients to receive compassionate, evidence-based psychiatric care without having to wait months—or travel hours—for an appointment.
Fellowship in Integrative Medicine
Curtis also completed a Fellowship in Integrative Medicine, which focuses on blending conventional medical treatments with complementary and lifestyle approaches. This could include nutrition, movement, stress reduction, mindfulness, or alternative therapies—always guided by science.
For patients, this means care isn’t one-size-fits-all. Curtis takes the time to understand what works for each individual, whether it’s medication, counseling, lifestyle changes, or a combination of all three. His holistic philosophy emphasizes resilience, balance, and prevention—values that reflect both the Alaskan spirit and Sunshine’s mission.
A Journey Rooted in Alaska
Curtis was born and raised in rural Vermont but was drawn to Alaska in 2008 by his love for the outdoors. Today, he calls Willow home, where he enjoys fishing, hunting, camping, skiing, snowshoeing, and woodworking.
His life in Alaska’s wilderness parallels his approach to healthcare: grounded, practical, and centered on strength and balance. His presence at Sunshine CHC is more than professional—it’s deeply personal, rooted in a love for this land and its people.
Eight Years of Sunshine
Since joining Sunshine Community Health Center in 2017, Curtis has worn many hats: primary care provider, psychiatric care provider, mentor, advocate, and partner in health. His dual specialties ensure that patients have access to whole-person care—physical and mental health, prevention and treatment, conventional and integrative.
Eight years later, Curtis continues to grow with Sunshine, taking on new patients and offering care that makes a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals and families across our region.
Isang Pangmatagalang Epekto
Community health depends on providers who are not only clinically skilled but also compassionate, accessible, and committed to the people they serve. Curtis Harvie embodies all of this. His wide-ranging expertise ensures that Sunshine CHC can offer comprehensive care, right here at home.
We are deeply grateful for Curtis’s eight years of service and look forward to many more years of his dedication to the health and well-being of our communities.
