What is women's health?

Women's health screenings are an important aspect of preventive healthcare. Some common screenings recommended for women include:

  •  Mammograms: Screening for breast cancer, usually recommended for women over the age of 40.

  • Pap smear: Screening for cervical cancer, typically recommended every 3 years for women aged 21-65.

  • Bone density test: Screening for osteoporosis, recommended for women over the age of 65.

  • HPV test: Screening for human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, which can lead to cervical cancer.

  • Cholesterol screening: To assess the risk of heart disease, recommended for women starting at age 20.

  • Blood pressure screening: To monitor blood pressure levels and assess the risk of heart disease.

  • Colorectal cancer screening: Recommended for women starting at age 50.

Why is it important?

It is important for women to discuss their individual health history and risk factors with a healthcare provider to determine the appropriate screenings and frequency. Regular screenings can help detect potential health issues early and improve outcomes. Some common health issues that affect women include:

  • Breast Cancer: Affects the breast tissue and is one of the most common cancers in women.

  • Osteoporosis: A condition characterized by weak and brittle bones, more common in postmenopausal women.

  • Heart Disease: Leading cause of death among women, often underdiagnosed and undertreated.

  • Reproductive Health Issues: Including menstrual irregularities, infertility, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and endometriosis.

  • Mental Health Issues: Such as depression, anxiety, and eating disorders, which can affect women at higher rates than men.

  • Autoimmune Diseases: Conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and multiple sclerosis that are more common in women.

  • Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Common bacterial infections that affect the urinary system, more prevalent in women.

  • Thyroid Disorders: Conditions like hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism that can affect hormone levels and metabolism.

  • Menopause: The natural decline of reproductive hormones in women, leading to symptoms like hot flashes, mood changes, and bone loss.

Don't Delay!

It is important for women to prioritize their health and seek regular medical check-ups to prevent and manage these common health issues. There are several reasons why some women may not seek or receive recommended health care screenings:

  • Lack of Awareness: Some women may not be aware of the importance of regular screenings or the specific screenings recommended for their age and risk factors.

  • Cost: Financial barriers, such as lack of insurance coverage or high out-of-pocket costs, can prevent women from accessing screenings.

  • Fear: Fear of finding out bad news or fear of the screening procedure itself can deter some women from seeking screenings.

  • Time Constraints: Busy schedules and responsibilities may make it difficult for some women to prioritize their health and make time for screenings.

  • Cultural or Language Barriers: Cultural beliefs, language barriers, or lack of culturally competent care can also be obstacles to accessing screenings.

  • Misinformation: Misconceptions or myths about screenings and their benefits may lead some women to avoid getting screened.

  • Lack of Access: Geographical barriers, lack of transportation, or limited availability of screening services in certain areas can hinder women from getting screened.

Sunshine Community Health Center can help address these barriers to care to keep you healthy. Call to schedule your appointment today.
