Depression & Mental Health Screening

October

October is depression and mental health screening month. Depression is common but can be a serious mental disorder. It affects how a person perceives their environment through their thoughts, feelings, and overall coping with daily stressors and activities. It can affect everyone, but studies show that women are often diagnosed more than men. Because men may not seek help for their feelings or emotional problems, they are at greater risk for depression and their symptoms being undiagnosed or undertreated (NIH,2023). LGBT also show higher rates of depression and are at a higher risk of being diagnosed with a depression-related disorder.

Mental Health Screenings

Mental health screenings have an important role in primary and mental health care. Many people assume that they know about depression and fully understand its impact, but many experience symptoms without understanding that depression is the cause. Screeners conducted by trained staff can providers rule out medical or mental health signs early and work to get you the best evidenced-based treatments to improve your symptoms. There are a variety of screeners that can be utilized to screen for depression, anxiety, and other mental health-related symptoms.
